New South Wales

Canberra

The Canberra District wine region incorporates the majority of vineyard developments in the northern part of the Australian Capital Territory and the adjoining area of New South Wales. The pioneer of the region, Dr Edgar Riek, planted the first vines in 1971. The Canberra District is formed by two areas of vineyards. The climate is one of extreme highs and lows, and irrigation is desirable to maintain a consistent yield. The majority of wineries are small, but it is becoming an important cool climate region. The main wine styles include Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Canberra is also Australia’s national capital city.

Cowra

Since the Cowra Estate planted its first vines in 1973, there has been enormous growth. Today, it is home to more than 40 vineyards. The region is defined by its warm days, cool nights and dry late summers, perfect for full-flavored Chardonnays. But Shiraz, Cabernet, and blends are gaining in popularity.

Gundagai

Gundagai is a newly developed wine region on the southwest slopes of New South Wales. Wine styles produced here include Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Hastings River

Hastings River has a history of viticulture and winemaking that dates back to 1837. With its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, it is the place to taste amazing seafood, paired with intense white varieties. The main wine styles produced here include Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, and Chambourcin.

Hilltops

Hilltops is a newer wine region, with cool climate conditions allowing for the production of an elegant Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a powerful, yet balanced wine with proven aging capabilities.

Hunter Valley

The Hunter Valley is Australia’s oldest and most visited wine region, with vines first planted in the 1820s. The wines are light & elegant in style, making them a perfect partner to food. They are lower in alcohol than those of many other regions. Hunter Valley Semillon is a unique Australian white wine that keeps getting better with age. The region also produces some of Australia’s most famous Shiraz, as well as innovative new varieties such as Tempranillo.

Wineries

Mudgee

With a viticultural history that stretches back to 1858, Mudgee has played a key role in Australian viticultural history. Although primarily a producer of robust and deeply colored red wines, Mudgee’s other exceptional wines include: Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, as well as many alternate varieties. Organic viticulture and winemaking are popular in Mudgee with several certified organic producers.

New England

New South Wales’ newest wine region is unlike any other grape-growing region in Australia due to its topographical diversity with high altitude vineyards, cool-climate vineyards, and lower and warmer vineyards on the western edges of the New England tablelands. New England’s conditions are perfect for Riesling.

Orange

The Orange region is ideal for grape growing and winemaking because of its combination of geology, soils, climate, and temperature. The region produces wines of distinct flavor and color. Plantings are about 60% red wine varieties and 40% white wine varieties.

Perricoota

The first vineyards were unsuccessfully planted in the Perricoota region in the 1860s. Then, in the 1990s, new vineyards were developed. One of NSW’s smallest regions, it is best known for Shiraz.

Riverina

The Riverina is the second-largest wine-producing region in Australia and the largest in New South Wales. It is a very important wine region, having achieved international acclaim for its sweet, botrytis-affected white wines.

Shoalhaven Coast

Shoalhaven Coast boasts a total production of around 500 tons or approximately 400,000 bottles. As a newer region, it is best known for Chambourcin, a French red wine hybrid variety with vibrant color and fresh plummy fruit aromas.

Southen Highlands

A newer cool-climate region, the Southern Highlands region is gaining attention for its Pinot Noir. This region came to fruition in the 1990s when wine growers became interested in the advantages of high altitude vineyards.

Tumbarumba

Tumbarumba vineyards are found at elevations ranging from approximately 980 to 2600 feet. Since 1982, more than 25 vineyards have been established in the region. Due to its colder climate, the majority of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes are used for sparkling wines.
