Kaesler featured in Wine & Spirits Magazine 01/15/2007
Reid Bosward took over winemaking at Kaesler in 1998, when, he ways, "The soils had been flogged to within an inch of their lives, and some of those vines were on the bones of their arse. So we turned the water off, started mulching under vine and sowing a cover crop in winter. And you can see what a difference it's made." Click here to read the entire article.

Epicurean ventures into New Zealand 10/20/2006
Epicurean Wines has been looking to add a New Zealand property for a long time but proprietor Benjamin Hammerschlag hadn’t found the right fit. He has been seeking the same kind of talent and passion that he has discovered in the winemakers he works with in Australia. In Ant Moore, he has finally found a winemaker with those qualities. Moore was raised in the Hunter Valley. He studied Wine Science at University before taking on winemaking positions within key Australian regions as well as in the state of Oregon. He was then drawn to New Zealand, accepting the role of Winemaker for Isabel Estate in Marlborough for 2 years. Moore has now developed his own 70 acres of vineyard in Marlborough with the establishment of Catalina Sounds. This is one of the most exciting projects of the year for Epicurean and it has been a long time coming.

Delicious new wines under a stylish label 10/20/2006
At Epicurean Wines we are fortunate to have amassed a portfolio of extremely talented young winemakers that aren’t afraid to push the limits or take on new opportunities. Because they are constantly sourcing and experimenting, they often approach us with really great raw materials and a willingness to make new wines. The Slipstream label has been created as a negociant line to allow Epicurean to take advantage of these opportunities. The line currently includes a Sauvignon Blanc from Western Australia and a blend of Shiraz & Grenache from McLaren Vale. A single vineyard Shiraz will be released later in the year.

When it comes to the full-bodied, powerful wines of Australia, Epicurean Wines has delivered, and then some. We are thrilled to expand the lighter side of the portfolio with three new wines made by Stephen Pannell. His own label has recently grown to include an elegant Sauvignon Blanc from the Adelaide hills as well as a lovely Grenache Rose from the Blewitt Springs sub-district in McLaren Vale. Additionally, he has partnered with us to create Seachange, a deliciously affordable Chardonnay that will retail for $10.

Corrina Rayment & Revolution Shiraz 10/20/2006
Epicurean is proud to welcome our first female winemaker. Revolution Shiraz landed in the States in June, 2006. The wine comes from one of the top growers in McLaren Vale and is essentially made from the highest grade fruit in the region. The project is born of Benjamin Hammerschlag’s relationship with the Oliver family and in particular, with winemaker Corrina Rayment, who naturally fits into the group of young and progressive winemakers that permeate the Epicurean Wines portfolio. Rayment is a progressive thinker and she’s willing to take risks. Revolution is designed to offer the best aspects of McLaren Vale (texture, suppleness and intensity) delivered at a reasonable price (less than $20 retail) and packaged in an innovative bottle.

Stephen Pannell...A new McLaren Vale Discovery 10/18/2005
The past year has yielded the discovery of a serious new talent in McLaren Vale. The goal of Epicurean Wines has always been to find the most talented winemakers in Australia. Some of the winemakers we enjoy working with and have the greatest respect and appreciation for are Reid Bosward, Ben Glaetzer, Ben Riggs, Dan Standish and Charles Cimicky, all extraordinary talents and key winemakers in the Epicurean Wines portfolio. Stephen Pannell is a natural addition to this line up. Like Glaetzer, Pannell grew up in the wine industry. In 1967, his family founded Mosswood, the second winery and vineyard to emerge in the Margaret River district. Pannell’s Australian credentials include Seppelts Great Western, Wirra Wirra, Hardy’s Tintarra and BRL Hardy Wine Company where he was the Chief Red Winemaker from 1999 to 2003. Pannell’s ambition has also taken him abroad where he has gained experience in Burgundy at Domaine Comte Lafon and Domaine del la Pousse d’or, Bordeaux at Chateau Mouton, Southern France at Jacques Lurton and Italy at GD Vajra Barolo. The time spent abroad has influenced Pannell’s view on winemaking, resulting in a conviction that Australia has the potential to produce pure and natural wines that are excellent without manipulation. Harvesting fully ripened fruit from the best vineyard sites eliminates the need for acidification and unnecessary handling in the winery. Pannell seeks to apply European methods to the tremendous raw materials available in Australia without sacrificing flavor and ripe tannins. The minimal use of new oak also highlights the vineyard and regional characteristics of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

Epicurean Wines' newest discovery: De Lisio 10/06/2005
During a visit to Australia in June of 2004 Hammerschlag was assessing the portfolio of another young winemaker in McLaren Vale. During the tasting, the parcels that stood out time and again had come from Tony De Lisio’s vineyards. The impression stuck and yielded an extensive tasting of De Lisio’s wines. Consistently impressed, Hammerschlag approached De Lisio and discovered an Italian immigrant with 30 years of experience in McLaren Vale. De Lisio’s talents lie in the vineyard and his connection to other immigrants in the region give him access to some of the best fruit in the district which happen to meet the classic Epicurean Wines criteria; phenomenal raw materials transformed into wines that are jam-packed with intensity. The wines are expected to land in Seattle in early November. Additional details can be found under De Lisio on the Reviews/POS page.

Winner's Tank Shiraz 2004 03/22/2005
Benjamin Hammerschlag’s most recent discoveries include this new venture between David and Cathy Knight and Reid Bosward from Kaesler Vineyards. The name ‘Winner’s Tank’ relates to an old water tank that sits in the corner of the vineyard. A strong rivalry exists between the three neighbouring towns in the local Australian Rules Football competition. Each year when one of these towns team wins the premiership, they head out to the vineyard to paint the tank in their teams colors.

Massena Epsilon 2004 03/22/2005
Due to arrive in April, 2005, this is the newest from Dan Standish and Jaysen Collins of Massena. Epsilon, the fifth star of the Southern Cross constellation, is a great example of how a background star can come to the fore. With fruit that contributed to an intra-regional blend, fifth generation Barossa grape-growers Aaron and Julie Southern were inspired to make a wine that would reflect their Shiraz vineyard in Greenock. Aged in French oak barrels, this wine is a true representation of the vineyard, which drinks well on release and will benefit from short to medium term cellaring.

Earthworks Shiraz 2004 03/22/2005
Australian Earthworks has a fierce commitment to quality as well as to preserving the heritage of the Barossa. The wines are produced from grapes harvested in the vineyards of trusted Barossa growers. As Australia is one of the oldest continents, Earthworks grapes are grown on soils up to 600 million years old, which are free draining, mineral rich and in one of the cleanest climates on the planet. Traditional winemaking and minimal processing are employed to ensure the purity, integrity, texture and flavor of the vines. In the words of winemaker, Tyson Bitter, “This is the essence of making a top wine and having fun doing it!” The Earthworks wines are deliberately bottled under a screw cap seal to ensure the quality always remains untainted.
